If you didn't read the title sarcastically, you probably haven't spent many winters here!

I think anybody in the state of Iowa would agree that we are having a rough winter this year. The Polar Vortex brought some of the coldest weather I have ever experienced, and on top of that, we're getting more snow just about every week. As an adult, winter hasn't been a whole lot of fun, but I know the kids are loving all their days off of school! Well, at least until they have to make them up later...

The good news is that we aren't alone here in Iowa. The rest of the Midwest has been suffering, too. It's just one of the joys of living here! The website Thrillist posted an article last month titled, "Every State, Ranked by How Miserable Its Winters Are," and not surprisingly, the Midwest is featured very heavily in the top 10. Minnesota came in first place, followed by my home state of Michigan, and Alaska came in 3rd. I'm pretty surprised by this, but Iowa somehow didn't make the top 10! We actually came in at number 11. The author of the article writes:

"One January, while inexplicably choosing to travel by car from Chicago to Iowa to watch an Iowa basketball game, there was a whiteout-style snowstorm en route, and a truck jack-knifed along I-80, and there was the biggest traffic jam in recent Iowa history, which we managed to avoid thanks to Google Maps all of a sudden nervously bellowing out that we needed to turn off onto some random farm road. All of the Iowans seemed to take this in stride with a suspiciously friendly Midwest-ness, possibly because Iowa has to deal with a super confluence of shitty weather.'"

If you want to escape the harsh Iowa winter, you may want to consider moving to Hawaii, Arizona, or California, the states with the easiest winters.

As I sit here writing this blog, I'm reminded that we have another snowstorm in the forecast today, so be safe out there! Check out the rest of the rankings HERE.
