The snow is inching closer and closer to Iowa. On October 1st, the city of Fairbanks in Alaska received three inches of fresh snow and another 2.8” the following day, October 2nd – both new daily records for snowfall.

On Wednesday, October 13th, areas near Deadwood, South Dakota received a whopping 27 inches of snow in just 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, SD.

Other areas in South Dakota also set daily snowfall records this week:

Spearfish, South Dakota – located in the Northern Black Hills Region, received 11.5” of snow on Wednesday, October 13th – setting a new daily record for snowfall. This area received a total between 14-15” from this October Snowstorm.

The normal high temperature for Mid-October in this area is near 60*. The high temperature on Wednesday in Spearfish, SD, was only 39*.

The city of Piedmont, SD, also set a new daily snowfall record for October 12 with seven inches of fresh snow.

The Pactola Dam area received 9” on 10/13 --- also a new daily record.

So…will it soon be Iowa’s turn to get pummeled? Let’s hope not. But, on October 25, 1898, a record of six inches of snow fell in Waterloo. That’s the snowiest day EVER in October for Waterloo. Since 1895, it has NOT snowed 68 years in October in Waterloo, most recently in 2016, according to weather.govThe average date for the first inch of snow to fall in Waterloo is the final week of November. The average date for Cedar Rapids to receive its first inch of snow is the first week of December.

If you remember on Halloween 2019, many parts of Iowa had their first snowfall of the season. Waterloo, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City all broke the record for most snowfall on October 31st with accumulations of around half an inch. Dubuque recorded six inches!
