There were very few things good about 2020, but one of them was national retailers realizing being open on Thanksgiving Day wasn't vital. They also recognized most customers were okay with it, and that their employees appreciated it immensely. As a result, Target has already announced they won't be open for Thanksgiving, on November 25, in 2021.

Here's what Target says on their website:

With safety top-of-mind, we took a completely new approach to Black Friday, offering big savings throughout the entire season and enhancing our Price Match Policy to provide guests with the ultimate assurance that they could count on Target for the best deals, regardless of when or how they chose to shop. We also closed our stores on Thanksgiving Day in order to minimize crowds and help our guests take the stress out of getting the best deals of the season. The response was so positive that we’ll carry it forward this year, keeping our Target stores closed all day long on Thanksgiving Day.

In 2020, more stores than ever before decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving. In addition to Target, the largest chain to announce they'd stay closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2020 was Walmart. They haven't announced plans for 2021. According to The Black Friday, there more than 80 retailers who didn't open for the national holiday last year. I, for one, hope the trend continues to grow.
