It took him 6 years, but 18-year-old Sivert Klefsaas is now $1,800 richer and he did it by staying off of social media.

Sivert Klefsaas from Motley Minnesota was 12-years-old when his mother, Lorna, proposed a challenge. If he could stay off social media until he was 18, she would pay him $1,800. She called her challenge, "18 for 18."

Sivert wanted to use that money to buy a car and being an already competitive athlete, Sivert treated the challenge like it was one of his football or basketball games, and he wasn't going to lose.

"Being 12, I didn't really have that great of a concept of money yet. So, I was like oh sick, yeah, absolutely,” Sivert told FOX43.

Sivert Klefsaas did in fact win the challenge. He celebrated his 18th birthday last weekend and earned himself the $1,800 that his mother promised him.

"I knew for sure he was going to make it," his mother told FOX43. "He did really dig in. He was like ‘I'm not breaking this.’ I'm proud of him because there were a few times where it was harder,” Lorna said.

Lorna was happy that her son stayed off social media because she witnessed firsthand how teens struggle with social media when her older daughter was having problems.

"She got so obsessed with keeping up her Snapchat streaks that it was affecting her mood. It was affecting her friendships...I mean, it was like an intervention. She was really, really upset, but it was not even three weeks later that she thanked us and said she was so happy to not have her phone." Lorna explained to FOX43.

Currently, Lorna's daughter is in grad school and doing well with her grades and social life, while her son is going through offers to play football in college.

Although Sivert said that staying off social media was worth it, giving him more time to focus on his grades and sports, he still decided to make an Instagram account after he completed the challenge.

"It's hilarious. I feel like I'm like 80. I can't seem to figure out social media. It's pretty embarrassing. I'll be with my friends, and they are like, 'what are you doing?'" Sivert laughed.

Lorna posted about her son's challenge on Facebook and it got hundreds of people's attention.

In her post, she notes "FYI—it’s some of the best money I have ever spent!!!"

Since her post blew up she has heard from other moms who are interested in setting up similar challenges for their kids.
