The first day back to class in Eastern Iowa is always hectic and sometimes bittersweet as students and families wrap up their fun and all-too-brief carefree summer together and turn their attention to classes, activities and carving out much less time together than they had in the previous 2-3 months. Most hope it doesn't turn dangerous but that's what happened in the Eastern Iowa community of Bennett on Tuesday.

A school bus crash took place around 7:25 a.m. that involved a student, the bus driver and the driver of the other vehicle ending up hospitalized with injuries, as KCRG had these details confirmed by the superintendent of the Bennett Community School District. A total of six students were reportedly on the bus at the time of crash, which happened around 7:25 on Tuesday, at Washington Avenue and Highway 130 between Bennett and New Liberty.

Officials in the Bennett Community School District posted the following message on Facebook, detailing the accident

According to KWQC:

On scene, deputies found a 2015 Bluebird Bennett School bus, driven by John Hulick and a 2016 Chrysler Town & Country Van driven by Gilbert Pewe.

The video footage below, featuring images from a KCRG viewer, shows a van and the bus going off the road after initial impact.

An investigation is ongoing and therefore, few other details are available at this time but as always, you can stay up to date on further developments in this and other breaking news stories by downloading the free station app.
