Tony Danza Returning to TV With Netflix Dramedy ‘The Good Cop’

Netflix may have gotten a bit more cancellation-happy, but that isn’t stopping their broad appetite for new series. The streaming service has booked Tony Danza’s bossy return for a new cop dramedy from the creator of Monk.

Per the outlet’s official word, Danza will headline ten one-hour episodes of The Good Cop, executive produced and showrun by Monk alum Andy Breckman, with Bones producer Randy Zisk and Office alum Howard Klein. The series is “inspired by a format from Israeli production company YES,” while the synopsis reads:

In The Good Cop, Danza plays Tony Sr., a disgraced, former NYPD officer who never followed the rules. He lives with his son, Tony Jr., an earnest, obsessively honest NYPD detective who makes a point of always following the rules. This “odd couple” become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice on everything from handling suspects to handling women.

For his part, Breckman downplayed the series’ dramatic aspects:

Many cop shows feature dark and provocative material: psycho-sexual killers, twisted, grim, flawed detectives. Many address the most controversial issues of the day. I watch a lot of them. God bless ‘em all. But the show I want to produce is playful, family-friendly, and a celebration of old-fashioned puzzle-solving.

Following his famous work in Taxi and Who’s the Boss?, some of Danza’s more recent credits include Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon and a Season 3 episode of Broad City. No premiere window was given, so stay tuned for the latest on Danza’s TV return.
