Every week we feature an adoptable animal from the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Each pet has their own story, but they all have one thing in common — they are looking for a new home. If you would like more information about one of our pets of the week, you can call the Cedar Valley Humane Society at (319) 362-6288 or visit them online at CVHumane.org.

Mickey is our furry friend featured in this weeks Pet Project. He is a 4-year-old Rat Terrier mix. Despite his blindness, Mickey is very in tune with his surroundings. He has excellent hearing and an incredible sense of smell. To see more of Mickey and tips on how to keep your pets safe this fall, check out the video below! With the weather beginning to cool down, fall will be here in no time! People and their pets are likely going to do more outdoor activities, such as camping and hiking. Here are some tips on keeping your pet healthy and safe while enjoying the cooler weather.

Always use flea and tick preventative. Fleas hit peak infestation in late summer and fall. They can carry tapeworms and other organisms that can be harmful to your pet. Ticks are also very prevalent in the fall season and can carry many harmful diseases, such as Lyme disease.

Keep your pet up-to-date on their vaccinations. Pets can come into contact with many harmful things while outside, so vaccinations are very important. For example, if a dog comes into contact with the excrement of a certain wild animal, it may contract a disease called leptospirosis. This disease is becoming more prevalent in Iowa. It can be fatal and can even be transferred to humans. Please consult your veterinarian about what vaccination schedule would be appropriate for your pet before taking part in any outside activities this fall.

It’s best to leave your pet at home when you're running errands. Keep in mind that although the weather is cooling down, a car can still heat up very quickly. On a cool 70 degree day a car can heat up to 100 degrees within 15 minutes.

You can help support the Cedar Valley Humane Society in keeping pets healthy this fall by donating to the $30K in 30 Days fundraiser. Their goal is to raise $30K, which is roughly the amount it takes to provide care for all of the shelter animals for 30 days.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society FirstGiving page makes it easy for you to raise funds by using your social networks. Please check it out, and help them by involving your friends and family in your passion for helping animals.
