Every week we feature an adoptable animal from the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Each pet has their own story, but they all have one thing in common — they are looking for a new home. If you would like more information about one of our pets of the week, you can call the Cedar Valley Humane Society at (319) 362-6288 or visit them online at CVHumane.org.

Amberlee is the friendly beagle mix featured in this weeks Pet Project. This adorable pup is six years old. To see more of this sweet girl, check out the video below! You can see all of the adoptable animals at CVHumane.org.

Obesity is a very common issue with pets and can be detrimental to their health. An overweight pet has many added stresses on their body and can be at risk for diabetes, liver problems and joint pain. Obesity is especially prevalent in certain breeds of dogs such as Pugs and Labrador Retrievers. Older pets are also more likely to become overweight. Here are some tips on how to keep your pet healthy and at the correct weight.

• Correct diet- There are many different types and brands of food out there. Check with your vet and discuss food options for your furry friend. It’s always best to make sure that your pet is getting the proper nutrients when cutting some calories.

• Reduce snack intake- Remove your pet from the room when the family eats. When feeding your pet be sure to serve all meals and treats in the pet’s bowl. No more table scraps!

Increase exercise- This is not only a great way for your pet to burn calories but it’s a great opportunity to bond with your pet. It also reduces appetite and adds muscle which increases metabolism.

• Provide non-food related attention- Give them cuddles or praise them vocally when they’re doing something good.

You can help support the Cedar Valley Humane Society in keeping pets healthy at the $30K in 30 Days fundraiser this September. Their goal is to raise $30K, which is roughly the amount it takes to provide care for all of the shelter animals for 30 days.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society FirstGiving page makes it easy for you to raise funds by using your social networks. Please check it out, and help them by involving your friends and family in your passion for helping animals.
