Every week we feature an adoptable animal from the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Each pet has their own story, but they all have one thing in common — they are looking for a new home. If you would like more information about one of our pets of the week, you can call the Cedar Valley Humane Society at (319) 362-6288 or visit them online at CVHumane.org.

Jordy is the furry friend featured in this weeks Pet Project. Jordy is a male chocolate lab mix. This lovable, energetic pup is a year and a half old. To see some of Jordy's playful antics, check out the video below! Jordy has found his forever home, but you can check out all of the other adoptable animals at CVHumane.org

Back to school is coming up and backpack items will be coming out. That being said, if you are considering adopting a puppy you must be prepared to prevent pups from chewing on the wrong items. Restrict access to items that you don't want them to have such as books, pens, shoes, etc. We all know that puppies and dogs naturally enjoy chewing and grasping items in their mouth in order to gather more information about them. Puppies are especially known for chewing as this is how they explore their environment. Give them toys that are easily distinguishable from forbidden items. For example, a dog toy that looks like a shoe may not be a good idea. Puppies also go through a teething period for about six months and chewing is the only way to relieve their discomfort. To mange this, pets must be trained to understand what items are acceptable to chew on. If you catch your dog with something they shouldn't have, interrupt the behavior with a loud noise and then offer one of the dog toys. Give your dog praise when they accept it. Disciplining your pup after the fact will not correct the behavior and may create other undesirable behaviors. Also, providing plenty of exercise that is appropriate for the dog's age and health will help keep them out of trouble.

Help the Cedar Valley Humane Society to keep doing all the great work they do finding these animals homes by supporting them at the Vinton Doggie Dip. Vinton pool will be hosting its annual Doggie Dip from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 23. The cost is only $3 per dog and owners get in free! Cedar Valley Humane Society will greet you with dog treats and informational handouts. Fun will be had for dogs and owners alike, so come on out and enjoy one last dip in the pool before school is back in session. Get more info now.
