The coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to a ton of holiday traditions this year, but the city of Cedar Rapids has found a safe way to make at least one of them happen! According to a new article from CBS 2, the city will be hosting a virtual tree lighting ceremony this weekend.

If you drive by Greene Square Park in Cedar Rapids, you'll notice the addition of a giant Christmas tree that's located directly across from the library. That tree is a Colorado spruce and was donated by the Thompson family of Cedar Rapids. They will actually be helping to light the tree this Saturday, December 5th.

If you'd like to check out the virtual tree lighting ceremony, it will be posted on the City of Cedar Rapids Government Facebook page on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The video will include a message from Cedar Rapids Mayor Brad Hart, a story from Mrs. Claus, a countdown with city employees, and, of course, Santa!

Even though this year's event is a little different than usual, you can still stop out at the park for a photo op! CitySource says:

"It is a holiday tradition for many families to have their photos taken in front of the holiday tree - and with all of this year's changes, a little normalcy is welcome. Families are encouraged to go to Greene Square to visit the tree and to take their holiday photos, but to remember to do so safely and maintain social distancing."
