In case you missed it: it's time to spring forward! It might not feel like Spring this week, but that's one of the points I'm about to discuss. Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour this weekend. Saturday night before bed, or by 2 a.m. Sunday morning, whichever comes first in your life. By the way, if we're out at the watering hole, what time are they actually going to close if we're skipping 2 a.m.?

This weekend is the END of daylight saving time.

A lot of people don't like daylight saving time. In fact, in Arizona and a few other states, they don't even observe it. So why do we? No one likes to lose that extra hour of sleep (even though it's only for one night--more on that later). Plus, how many times have you forgotten to even do it? Heck, I can't tell you how many years at this job where I've talked about it all day long on the air and STILL forgot to do it myself! Not to mention, how many clocks do you have that still need to be reset manually? Not many, I assume. It took me a couple years to figure out that this one clock I have actually resets itself for daylight saving time. That was definitely a confusing period in my life.

But it does have its benefits.

  1. One hour closer to Spring. Think about it. We're just speeding up the clock toward Spring, which can't come soon enough. It's going to start staying lighter longer, too.
  2. You can sound smart. Have I mentioned it is Daylight SavinG time, not Daylight SavingS time? Don't miss this chance to show off your intelligence--or annoying knack for condescension. By the way, the Spring is when Daylight SavinG time ENDS, and in the fall it BEGINS, in case I didn't already mention that. (Sheldon Cooper would be so proud right now).
  3. Your house won't burn down. You know how they also suggest changing your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries when the clocks change? Yeah.
  4. You get to listen to people complain about it. Yet another thing the entire country is divisively split down the middle on, and you'll hear about it either way all week next week.
  5. "Losing an hour of sleep". But also losing an hour of anything else you don't like to do on the weekend. Chores, work, whatever. Way to look on the bright side, right?
