Cold weather will not stop the Iowa City Farmers' Market and its organizers from serving those in need in the community.

By popular demand, the Cedar Rapids Gazette says Iowa City will continue its Farmers Markets through December. At the end of October, nonprofit organization Field to Family will take over the operation from the city of Iowa City for a Winter drive-up market.

The "summer" market season ends October 31, but the new extended dates will occur on November 7, 14 and 21 and December 5 and 12.

Customers will place their orders on this website on Tuesdays and Wednesdays prior to the markets, and will then pick up their orders on Saturday at the new location as of November 7 at Field to Family's warehouse at 840 S. Capitol St.

Field to Family has already been a big part of the markets this season, as customers made $13,000 in donations to their programs to feed free, locally grown produce to Johnson County households experiencing food insecurity.

Farmers have also benefitted by receiving over $452,000 from market orders.

The one catch to the extended market as it moves to a new smaller location, service will be limited to 200 customers per market, compared to the 500 it's been able to accommodate to-date at its prior location in the Chauncey Swan Ramp parking garage.

A spokesperson told the Cedar Rapids Gazette demand has been high by both patrons and vendors to continue serving the local community with the virtual online Farmers' Market and curbside pickup, so they were encouraged to continue.
