An official groundbreaking ceremony took place in Marion on Wednesday on what will soon be the site of the new Marion YMCA. But city officials say that $2 million is still needed from donors to complete the project.

The current Marion YMCA was built over 50 years ago, back when the population of the city was just 12,000 residents. Now, Marion has reached a population in excess of 40,000. It was clear a new multi-use facility was needed. Marion residents wanted a new fitness facility and more space for community functions. Instead of building multiple structures, the Y and the city of Marion joined together for the new project.

The new YMCA will be five times the size of the current location. Plus, the new location just north of Tower Terrace Road, will make it easier to access for more Marion residents. The project is expected to cost around $20 million and the YMCA, not the city of Marion, will run and maintain it.

Officials hope to have construction done and the doors open on the new Y by the end of 2020.
