The holiday season got off to a horrible start in the town of Waukesha, Wisconsin on Sunday. An SUV sped through barricades and into a Christmas parade that featured marching bands, floats, and children dressed in Santa hats, according to the Associated Press.

As of late last night, the city of Waukesha has confirmed at least five people have died, and more than 40 others were injured. The city said that it is still collecting information. The numbers released are expected to go higher as some people drove themselves to hospitals. Information on the victims of the attack has not been released.

The AP reports that police in Waukesha say that they have a person of interest in custody. No other information about that person is being made available. Police officials say that the investigation is ongoing and they are getting assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The AP reports that the horrible incident was recorded on many cell phone cameras and also on the city live stream of the event. One video shows the moment that the SUV broke through the barricades and then what sound like gunshots. Waukesha police confirm that an officer fired his gun to try and stop the vehicle. No one was injured by the gunfire.

Chris Germain owns a dance studio and had around 70 people participating in the parade. He told the AP that he saw the SUV speed past his group. He later walked up the route to see the damage. He said that "there were small children laying all over the road, there were police officers and EMTs to CPR on multiple members of the parade".
