The Retro Cafe returns today, and so does the Retro Cafe blog. Tune in at noon each weekday for a full hour of music from the 1980s on KDAT.

In honor of the late George Michael, who sadly passed away on Christmas at age 53, we bring you the highlights of the year 1988! George Michael had one of the top songs/albums that year with "Faith".

1980sflashback.com and Wikipedia note that  in 1988, George H.W. Bush became the 41st President of the United States. It was the first year we were told, "this is not your Father's Oldsmobile" in an ad campaign for now-defunct auto maker Oldsmobile.

You could fill up whoever's Oldsmobile it was, for $1.08 per gallon of gas.

Median household income was $27, 225, the cost of a new home was $138,300, and according to Polidiotic, the national debt had reached $252,060,821,088.16.

What are your memories of 1988? Share them in the comments.
