Cedar Rapids Studio of Famous Iowan’s Artwork Reopens In April

Grant Wood is a legend in the art world, especially here in his home state of Iowa. A chance for you to check out the works of the famed artist behind "American Gothic" and others for free will come when the Grant Wood Studio and Armstrong Visitors Center reopens Saturday, April 2.

Free admission is made possible through a grant from the Esther and Robert Armstrong Charitable Trust. According to CBS2, Grant Wood called this studio his home from 1924 to 1935 so before you even tour the studio to view his works, the building itself is a work of structural art to be admired in its own right, as it was turned from loft to studio.

Hours for this free tour of the studio, once it reopens, will be Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Tours begin every half hour and are limited to 10 people per tour.

Speaking of American Gothic, it's also noted that he painted that piece in this studio.

Meanwhile, when finished touring the studio, visitors can head a few blocks over to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (CRMA) where a Grant Wood exhibit continues. From the CRMA website:

Grant Wood: From Farm Boy to American Icon offers an expansive look at Wood’s life and career though his art. Housed in one of our largest first-floor galleries, this installation reflects the depth of the CRMA’s Grant Wood collection as well as the great breadth of Woods’ career, cut tragically short by his death in 1942.

Visiting hours at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, located at 410 3rd Ave SE are:

• Tuesday: Noon-4 p.m.
• Wednesday: Noon-4 p.m.
• Thursday: Noon-8 p.m.
• Friday: Noon-4 p.m.
• Saturday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
• Sunday: Noon-4 p.m.

Face masks remain required for visitors at both the Grant Wood Studio/Armstrong Visitors Center and Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
