No matter what side of the aisle you fall on, I think we can all agree that teachers are underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated. The superintendent for Waterloo Public Schools is looking to give teachers and staff an extra hand this year.
On the morning of Thursday, January 20th, Waterloo Schools Superintendent Jane Lindaman sent out a message to all staff members. Lindaman told faculty in an email that all staff members would be receiving a bonus in their next paycheck "in recognition of your efforts during such a challenging school year."
The bonus check was approved by the Waterloo Schools Board of Education on Thursday morning. Said check will be given to all regular full and part-time employees. As reported by the Waterloo Courier, this bonus will be covered by Federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds.
The $550 is meant to be a COVID-19 bonus and will be paid to employees on January 26th, 2022. This amount will be given out as a separate check.
Lindaman continues on in the message,
"This is just one of many things we’re trying to offer in recognition of and gratitude for how you’ve handled such a tumultuous and stressful time as educators!"
The Waterloo Schools Superintendent mentioned another bonus for employees. Due to concerns with retaining staff, school officials will offer a $550 retention bonus for anyone who resigns their contract and returns to the district for the following school year.

Good Morning Waterloo Schools Staff,
Thank you so much for your commitment to keeping our kids safe and healthy and for working together to provide a top-notch education during such unprecedented and trying times. We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback related to the flexible location day on January 14, and we are happy it was well-received. Please know...we don’t plan on stopping there.
In recognition of your efforts during such a challenging school year, we’re pleased to announce a bonus check just approved by our Waterloo Schools Board of Education this morning! All regular full and part-time employees in a paid status on January 26, 2022, will receive a COVID-19 bonus on that same day (1.26.2022). The bonus amount will be $550 in order to ensure there is a net benefit of $500 in the paychecks of regular full and part-time employees and will come as a separate check.
This is just one of many things we’re trying to offer in recognition of and gratitude for how you’ve handled such a tumultuous and stressful time as educators!
Additionally, as we plan for next year, it’s very important to us that we retain our staff. The students need us! That’s why we will be offering an additional $550 retention bonus for anyone who signs their contract and returns to our district for the 2022-2023 school year. (More details on this will follow.)
There’s more to come as we continue through the school year. While we are using these ESSER funds to say thank you for the incredible work that you are doing, we are also working to do our best to become a better employer and one of the top places to work in the Cedar Valley. We know we have a long way to go and a lot more work to do, but we are committed to Emerging Stronger Together!!

Roseanne Barr Abandoned Iowa Mansion in Eldon, IA

I fell into a rabbit hole when I found out that Roseanne Barr almost had a mansion in Iowa. After seeing the current state of the property on Facebook, I was amazed that such an extravagant project could be so quickly overtaken by nature. Only two hours away from Waterloo, this abandoned field could have hosted some of the coolest and elite Hollywood parties in the Midwest. The current photos were taken by Gable Fry on a recent trip he took.
