If you're a longtime listener of KHAK's Brain and Courtlin in the morning, you probably know that Brain was a drummer growing up and singing was Courtlin's thing.

Neither one of them spend a huge time dwelling on it, but they were both very good at their "craft," if you will. Even today, Brain likes to drum with his fingers on our control board in the studio and Courtlin still has a passion for singing.

I love to hear Courtlin sing the national anthem. I still remember the first time I heard her do it. It was July 4, 2014, her first Independence Day in Cedar Rapids. I was in the studio after a concert at the McGrath Amphitheatre, and Courtlin sang the Star-Spangled Banner over our airwaves, just before the fireworks in downtown Cedar Rapids. She totally blew me away.

Singing our country's most important song is nerve-wracking and pressure-packed but every once in a while we talk her into doing it. Last Friday night, she sang it before KHAK Night at the Cinch World's Toughest Rodeo. She blew me away again...
