Meet Kas. A great dog with a great deal of energy...and sweet personality! Stephanie Schmitz, Community Project Manager at the Cedar Valley Humane Society brought Kas in and we all loved hanging out with this dude. Stop in and see Kas. The CVHS is open Sunday this holiday weekend, but closed Saturday and Memorial Day.

Stephanie has some great tips on flea and tick care as the weather warms in Eastern Iowa.

Summer is a wonderful time for outdoor activities for both the family and the family dog. Unfortunately, with the beautiful weather comes fleas and ticks and the diseases they carry with them. This is why flea and tick prevention is so important. Fleas can cause heartworms and ticks can cause Lyme disease. Both can be detrimental to our pets' health so we recommend two types of preventative. But before giving your pets any medications, please run it by your vet first.

. A flea and tick preventative is typically administered between the shoulder blades and on the skin. We prefer something like Frontline Plus which kills flea eggs, larvae, adult fleas and ticks.

. We also recommend using a heartworm preventative like Heartgard, which is usually administered by mouth. Products like Heartgard Plus not only protect your pet from heartworm, but intestinal parasites as well. Treatment for heartworm can be a lengthy and stressful process for any pet, not to mention quite costly. So preventing the disease is the best way to go for the sake of your pet and your pocket book.

. Although one doesn't usually see fleas and ticks during the colder months, it is very important to continue the heartworm and flea/tick preventatives throughout the year as there is a small chance that your pet may come into contact with them. We also recommend taking your pet for a yearly checkup at the vet to make sure they are healthy. The sooner a problem is found, the easier it may be for the vet to treat the issue.
