In the interests of full disclosure, most times when I hear about a fast food restaurant deciding to discontinue a certain menu item, I really don't care. At all. If there ever was discontinued food that I loved, I've long ago forgotten about it.

That's just me. Today's news about Arby's making the decision to drop potato cakes from their menu is going to be a different story at my house. My wife Amy has loved those things as long as I can remember, and so does my son. And my daughter. And my mother-in-law. There are going to be some bad moods on display at home. Even our own Joe Dredge expressed a mixture of shock and outrage at hearing this. Not even talking about Dogecoin made him feel better.

It seems like this rumored move by Arby's is not a rumor. They really are pulling the plug on their potato cakes. They've already got the curly fries, and now the crinkle-cut fries, so maybe the pressure of being a 3-spud establishment was just too much to bear.

TheTakeOut.com reports that they became aware of the menu change by seeing a lot of Twitter activity on the subject, so they sent an email to Arby's corporate offices to ask if all the talk was true. Here's the response from Arby's:

Our Curlies have long been a fan favorite, but after many months of R&D and extensive market testing, customers made it clear our all-new Crinkles were a hit and we had created a true companion on equal footing to its legendary predecessor. Now we have the two best fries in QSR – crinkles and curlies – and they go great together! Although our Potato Cakes have been discontinued (for now), who’s to say they’re gone forever?

They're not gone here in Rockford, yet. I took a couple of minutes to call a few of our local Arby's restaurants to ask about the status of potato cakes, and all of them confirmed to me that potato cakes are definitely on their way out. The difference between the Rockford locations is that one place told me they were done with the potato cakes on June 1st, while the others said it could be mid or late June, depending on supplies.

For those who love those things, I'm sorry for your loss. For my family, maybe this will get you guys through until the day that Arby's reconsiders:
