Help brighten the life of a veteran who has served and sacrificed so much to give us what we have.

To thank senior veterans currently housed in nursing home facilities in the area, the Freedom Festival (which was founded by veterans) will be giving back by delivering poinsettia plants in honor of Veterans' Day.

It's called "Project Poinsettia" and it was made possible by community contributions and a donation from Hy-Vee. 500 poinsettia plants will be delivered on Wednesday, November 11 along with cards created by kids in the Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy at Roosevelt Middle School.

"We are grateful for our partnerships with area senior facilities and are excited to launch this new initiative in the community", said Carissa Johnson, Freedom Festival Director, to Iowa's News Now.

They do not specify which senior living facilities will be recipients of the deliveries, but you can donate to keep Project Poinsettia going into the future. A Facebook post on the Freedom Festival page gives all the details. A simple $10 donation, which can also be made here, goes a long way to honor the servicemen and women to whom we pay tribute next Wednesday while keeping an important and popular community event, the Freedom Festival, at the top of mind after it was called off in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Here's hoping as well that the pandemic will be behind us by the time next summer's Freedom Festival is scheduled for June 17-July 4, 2021. For more information or to donate visit their website.
