This guy's name is Mojo. Interestingly, my personal mojo quotient is often determined by the amount of exposure I have to dogs. They are an emotional uplift for sure. This guy would be an uplifting addition to your home. Stop by seven days a week to the Cedar Valley Humane Society and say hi to Mojo and all his pals.

Here's a summary of Stephanie's talking points on the Pet Project this week.

Water Safety for Dogs

It’s always fun to take your dogs out on the river or lake with you but there are some things we all must be aware of when doing so.

Big-chested dogs like Boxers and Bulldogs are front-heavy and may have a more difficult time staying above water. Dogs with short noses like pugs and Boston Terriers also have a hard time swimming as water is more likely to end up in their noses. Also, smaller dogs have shorter legs and have less stamina when it comes to swimming longer distances.

Life jackets are a great idea for all dogs as they make it easier for your dog to swim and stay afloat. You can purchase them at a pet store or online. Also, if your dog is not wearing a life jacket, make sure they are wearing a bright- colored collar so that boaters will be able to see your dog and stay clear of them.

                                                       Upcoming Events

We will have a few events coming up in the next couple of weeks. Springapawlooza is coming up on May 30th from 12pm-5pm. It will take place at the shelter. Fido Fotos will be taking place all day and Carl Bromberg, owner of Vision’s Photography will be there to take pictures of your animals so if you would like to sign up, please call Stephanie Schmitz at 319-362-6288. There will be a bounce house, games, prizes and hot dogs available. Sparkles the Clown will also be there from 1pm-3pm.

For the month of June, to celebrate Pet Appreciation, you may post a photo of your pet in the Milestones section of the Gazette for only $20. For $40, you can have a photo posted along with your name and your pet’s name.

Also, beginning in the month of June, we will be hosting a fundraiser in which businesses can participate in Jeans Day. The businesses may choose how much they would like to donate per participant. Each employee that wears jeans will donate that amount to Cedar Valley Humane Society.
