Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Kennedy high schools, which combined serve more than 3,000 students, will not have school librarians next year. Due to the district's $2.3 million budget shortfall, each of the district's three comprehensive high schools had to cut four full-time staff positions, a result of falling enrollment and poor funding from the state.

Without the librarians on staff, the libraries will be run by media secretaries. They are not required to have any professional training and only need to have a high school degree.

Librarians say they plan to fight the decision at Monday's board meeting at 5:30 p.m. As it stands now, Cedar Rapids Washington will be the only comprehensive high school with a librarian next year.
