Violent Night of Gunfire in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids Police reported a flurry of gunfire in Cedar Rapids on Thursday night.
According to Cedar Rapids Police, three separate incidents of gunshots were investigated, one involving an 18 year-old victim who was shot in back on the northeast side while riding a scooter. There were at least six houses sprayed with bullets, and shots were fired near Kirkwood Parkway on the SW side. All of these incidents occurred within a period of six hours.
CBS 2 Iowa's News Now reports that gunfire erupted around 5:15 p.m. in the 700 block of G Ave. NE. Police believe the gunfire was a targeted attack but say that the six houses that received damage were not the intended target. Police are asking for leads and encourage citizens to call Crime Stoppers with any information.
The second incident happened around 6:40 p.m. in the 5700 block of C Avenue NE. Officers arrived and assisted an 18-year old male victim suffering a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his lower back. Police say the investigation found that the victim and a companion were riding scooters on the sidewalk when someone driving by opened fire. The victim was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.
According to the CRPD Facebook page, around 11:11 p.m. cops received calls of shots fired near Kirkwood Parkway SW. Cops spoke to witnesses and said they discovered shell casings nearby, but no injuries or damage was initially reported.
It's frightening to see this type of violence escalating in our town. Good citizens need to support one another and assist our police force in identifying those responsible.
