The first month of the year is NEVER a warm one in Iowa. The "normal" average high temperature in January is in the upper-20s while the average low hovers around 10*.

The warmest it has EVER been in Waterloo (According to records kept by the National Weather Service) occurred on 1/26/2002 when the mercury reached a towering 65*. It was the middle of three straight January days of high temperatures in the 60s that year.

On that same date (1/26/2002) Charles City (64), Oelwein (64), and Decorah (63) recorded their warmest January temperature of all-time. This was the fourth time that Oelwein’s January high temperature had been broken in 2002. The previous dates were January 8 (57), January 23 (59), and January 25 (61).

It's been 18 years since Waterloo has had a high temperature of 60* or higher in the month of January. (1/8/2003 it reached a record-high 60*)

The most recent time the Waterloo-area had a high temperature of at least 50* in January was three years ago, in 2018, when it was 50* on January 20th.

So far in 2021, Waterloo has had just one day reach at least 40*, Wednesday, 1/13.

So while the odds are not in our favor to reach another 60* day this month in the area, remember: even 30* is above normal. Let's not get too greedy. :)
